There were so many aspects of his life that felt like a dream compared to life in the universe he'd been born in. Jessica once said that maybe he had always belonged in her world. It was something that Diego thought about from time to time and a spark in him to make up for the 'lost time', finishing the place they'd call home together.
He repeatedly dreamt about their future, something he never dared to give any thought before. Nightmares were seldom. The bad dreams that haunted him from time to time were the loss of his mom, finding Jessica hurt, and some of the flashes of her memories. It was the latter that gave him the biggest drive to get their home completed. If she wouldn't leave the dangerous city then he'd make sure she was well protected.
However, her memories sometimes prompted great dreams. He'd seen her go through terrible situations and how she hardly smiled. Diego found genuine joy at seeing Jessica happy, feeling her delight through their connection. There were times he would wake up and find her softly smiling in her sleep. Exhaustion had him sound asleep, not having any clue that she remained nestled close.
Not the sounds of the city outside of her window, or the neighbors in the hall, or even the vibration of their cell phones on silent managed to wake him. It wasn't until no longer feeling Jessica close that pulled him out of sleep. Diego stirred, rubbing at his eyes with the back of his hand then attempting to look for her. "Shit. What time is it?" he groggily called out.
